Understanding Unicode vs Preeti: How the Conversion Works

Unicode (sometimes confused with "unique code") is the international standard that assigns a permanent code point to every character in every language. Nepali characters live in the Devanagari block (U+0900–U+097F). The letter is always stored as U+0915, regardless of what font or device you use. Unicode text is truly portable — it displays correctly on every phone, browser, and operating system without installing any special font.

Preeti works completely differently. It is a visual encoding that maps Nepali-looking glyphs onto standard English keyboard positions. The text file itself contains Roman ASCII characters — it only looks like Nepali when the Preeti font is applied. Without the font, Preeti text appears as meaningless symbols.

Example: How "नेपाल" is stored in each system

✅ Unicode (universal)

नेपाल

Stored as Devanagari code points. Readable on every device.

⚙️ After conversion to Preeti

g]kfn

Displays as Nepali only when Preeti font is applied.

The real challenge lies in conjunct consonants (जोडाक्षर). In Unicode, a conjunct like क्ष is stored as three logical characters: क + ् + ष. But in Preeti, conjuncts are mapped to completely different key positions, and the visual order of characters often differs from the logical order. Our converter handles this automatically — including tricky cases like द्ध, त्र, र्क, and the ि (chhotee ee matra) which must be placed before the consonant in Preeti but after it in Unicode.

Convert from Any Unicode Nepali Font to Preeti

This converter works with text from any Unicode-based Nepali font. Whether your text was typed in Mangal, Kalimati, Nirmala UI, Kokila, or any other modern Nepali font — the conversion to Preeti will be accurate because all these fonts share the same Unicode encoding underneath.

  • Mangal to Preeti — Mangal is the default Nepali font in older versions of Windows. Text typed in Mangal is Unicode and converts perfectly to Preeti.
  • Kalimati to Preeti — Kalimati is the Nepal Government's standard font. Copy your Kalimati text here and get accurate Preeti output instantly.
  • Nirmala UI to Preeti — Nirmala UI is the default Devanagari font in Windows 10 and 11. All Nirmala UI Nepali text is Unicode and fully compatible.
  • Kokila to Preeti — Kokila is widely used in formal Nepali documents. It uses standard Unicode encoding.

Note: If your source text is already in another legacy font like Kantipur or PCS Nepali, you will need to first convert it to Unicode, then use this tool to get Preeti output. Legacy-to-legacy font conversion requires a different mapping table.
